Hollywood besties Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are teaming up to bring the true story of how an ex-cop rigged McDonald’s famous Monopoly game to the big screen.
According to Deadline, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have joined forces with Fox to acquire the rights a story published by The Daily Beast that recently went viral.
Titled How an Ex-Cop Rigged McDonald’s Monopoly Game and Stole Millions, the piece published by Jeff Maysh on July 28 details how a man named Jerome Jacobsen used his “criminal network of mobsters, psychics, strip club owners, convicts drug traffickers, and a family of mormons” to cheat McDonald’s out of $24 million worth of cash and prizes.
Though the popular fast food joint board game encouraged patrons to collect game pieces during each visit in the hopes of winning big since its inception in 1987, Maysh’s true-crime story details how Jacobson and his network figured out how to rig the game in order to win almost every major prize McDonald’s was offering since 1999.
Fox wasn’t the only studio bidding on the rights to the piece. Other studios who were interested include Universal, Warner Bros., and even Netflix. At the end of the day however, Fox reigned supreme although it’s not clear just how much the studio paid for the rights.
Affleck will serve as director on the project, while Damon is set to star in the upcoming crime film.
Behind the scenes, Fox has tapped Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese to pen the script for the upcoming film. These days screenwriting duo are best known for working on the scripts for fellow Fox entities Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
There’s currently no word on when Fox plans to release the film in theaters.
