After butting heads with Disney over the “exclusively gay moment” in Beauty and the Beast, Malaysia — where gay sex is illegal — has decided to release the live-action reimagining without any cuts.
Last week we told you Malaysia asked Disney for four minutes of cuts to Beauty and the Beast. Most of the edits were to remove anything that was remotely gay going on with LeFou.
Now, Malaysia has changed their mind. The film will be released on March 30 with no edits, but the film has been bumped up to PG-13 so parents are advised that there is inappropriate content in the film, like two men dancing together for roughly .001 seconds.
Disney had refused to make Malaysia’s edits, which prompted the country to halt the movie’s release.
Malaysian censorship board Chairman Abdul Halim said recently, “Malaysia does not recognize the LGBT ideology. So we have to be extra cautious in our work. We have our responsibilities to the country, the people and our constitution. If we let these scenes pass, people will wonder if Malaysia recognizes LGBT.”
