HBO’s trailer for Bad Education has Hugh Jackman playing against type, with the perennial antihero stepping into the shoes of a corrupt superintendent.
Hugh Jackman may have built his career on playing heroes, but his role as Frank Tassone in the upcoming HBO release Bad Education is anything but.
Based on a true story, Bad Education tells the story of a student reporter who starts to trace embezzlement at the Roslyn School District in Long Island after the assistant superintendent makes a crucial mistake that hints at corruption that spans over a decade.
The film wowed audiences and critics at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and HBO quickly picked up the ripped-from-the-headlines dark comedy film for nearly $20 million.

Bad Education is a docudrama that centers on Dr. Frank Tassone, the superintendent of the Rosalyn School District in Long Island that he led to be the fourth best in the country. However, in that drive to raise test scores and college admissions rates, he also helped to lead the largest school embezzlement scam in history, draining nearly $11.2 million from the schools. Bad Education will follow him as he’s forced to deal with the fallout of this scandal and attempts to protect others — and himself.
Bad Education stars Hugh Jackman as Dr. Frank Tassone, Emmy and Oscar award-winning actress Allison Janney as Pam Gluckin, his assistant on the job and in the embezzlement plot, and Emmy award-winning actor Ray Romano as Bob Spicer. The film also features Geraldine Viswanathan, Alex Wolff, Rafael Casal and Annaleigh Ashford.
Cory Finley, who wrote and directed the 2017 indie hit Thoroughbreds, directed the film from a screenplay by Mike Makowsky. The screenplay is based the story on a New York Magazine article by Robert Kolker.
Bad Education will be released on HBO on April 25, and will be available on HBO Max once that streaming service debuts in May.
