Described as “thrilling emotional drama,” Netflix’s Away centers on American astronaut Emma Green (Hilary Swank) as she gears up to lead an international crew on the first mission to Mars.

For as much as Emma’s been training for this moment, it doesn’t come without its sacrifices. Namely, as the first trailer for the series shows, she’ll have to grapple with the decision to leave her husband, Matt (Josh Charles) and her teenage daughter, Alexis (Talitha Bateman) behind.

Back on earth, Matt and Alexis are dealing with their own struggles. Matt, a NASA engineer, is dealing with Emma’s mission back on earth as part of his job. He’s also simultaneously trying to raise their teenage daughter on his own. Meanwhile, Alexis is dealing with her own coming of age struggles.

Up in space, Emma’s not the only one making sacrifices for the sake of the advancement of humankind. As the trailer continues on, we’re introduced to the rest of Emma’s crew, all of whom are struggling with being away.

As the crew’s journey into space intensifies, their personal dynamics and the effects of being away from their loved ones back on Earth become increasingly complex.
