Atypical will wrap up its run on Netflix with the upcoming fourth season, which Netflix has officially confirmed will be its final one.
Although Netflix is known for constantly putting out new shows, very few of those shows ever make it past their third season due to the streaming service’s model of canceling shows once it’s clear they’re likely not to bring in new subscribers.
However, it looks like Atypical will buck that trend by being awarded a fourth season, joining the ranks of Netflix comedy originals like Grace and Frankie, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Fuller House and The Ranch.
Unfortunately, the news is a good news, bad news situation for fans, as Netflix has likewise officially confirmed that Atypical’s fourth season will also be its final season.
Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), a 19-year-old on the autism spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the ongoing central theme of the series: what does it really mean to be normal? In season three, Sam started his first year of college and was faced with the challenge of figuring out what success means for him, while adjusting to the changes that come with growing up.
Atypical first premiered in 2017, with the second season debuting a year later and the third season dropping last November. Though the show was neither a breakout hit nor an awards darling, the Peabody Award-nominated show still posted respectable numbers and received solid enough reviews to power it through to a fourth season renewal, which will feature 10 episodes and will premiere in 2021.
“I’m thrilled we’ll be doing a season four of Atypical,” series creator Robia Rashad said. “And while I’m so sad to be nearing the end of this series, I am extremely grateful to have been able to tell this story. Our fans have been such beautiful, vibrant supporters of this show. Thank you for being so open to Sam’s voice and stories, and those of the entire Gardner family. It’s my hope that the legacy of Atypical is that more unheard voices continue to be heard and that even after this series ends, we keep telling funny, emotional stories from underrepresented points of view.”
