Former Superman Brandon Routh will return to the comic book world as he is set to join Arrow‘s third season in a recurring role.
Routh has been cast as Ray Palmer, who DC fans will recognize as the superhero and Justice League member The Atom, reports TVLine.
Ray, who will be the new owner of Queen Consolidated after the death of Isabel Rochev in season 2, is described as “an unparalleled scientist and inventor” who will “play an unexpected role” in the lives of Oliver and Felicity. His plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences division in particular “will be shrouded in mystery.”
That sounds ominous, especially after Isabel took over Queen Consolidated to use the Applied Sciences division to help Slade manufacture more Mirakuru serum.
We’re guessing Ray is the actual name of the Daniel from the original casting call we reported on previously:
This major recurring character is in his 20s and is described as “handsome, enigmatic” as well as being a “highly intelligent entrepreneur developing groundbreaking technology.”
While Daniel “exud[es] charm and confidence in public, he privately harbors a tragic past that will drive him to become a tech-powered superhero.” He is also expected to be a love interest for Felicity and a rival for Oliver on both the personal and professional fronts.
Also notable is that Ray may be a love interest for Felicity.
The “tech-powered superhero” description is a giveaway, as in the comics, Ray develops equipment to shrink himself to subatomic sizes using white dwarf star material. He is also able to simulate flight. Though he has appeared in numerous animated series, this will be his live-action debut.
With Arrow‘s more grounded approach to the superhero world, we’ll be interested to see how Ray is portrayed, especially since Arrow spinoff The Flash is introducing superpowers to the shared world of the two shows.
Routh’s credits include Superman Returns, Chuck, Partners, and Enlisted.
Routh joins a rebuilding Arrow cast that includes the new additions of Devon Aoki as Katana, Karl Yune as Maseo Yamashiro, and Peter Stormare as Vertigo.
Arrow‘s third season premieres Wednesday, October 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
