Apple’s The Essex Serpent has found its newest star in Tom Hiddleston.
According to Deadline, Avengers vet, Tom Hiddleston has officially joined the cast of the upcoming drama series, The Essex Serpent.
The series, which is set to debut via Apple TV+, is based off of author Sarah Perry’s novel of the same name.
Set in 1893 in the Victorian era, the story centers on Cora— a widow who’s invigorated over finally being freed of her marriage with an abusive husband. Now freed from the confines of her abusive marriage, Cora opts to relocate, moving out of London and over to a small village in Essex called Aldwinter.
Once there, it’s not long before she finds herself becoming incredibly intrigued by a local legend that says that the small village might be haunted by a mythical sea creature known as the Essex Serpent.
Tom Hiddleston joins Clare Danes, who was cast to take on the role of Cora last month. Danes, in turn, takes over the starring role in the drama series from Kiera Knightly, who bowed out of the project in October due to coronavirus concerns.
For his part, Hiddleston will take on the role of Will Ransome in the forthcoming adaptation. Will is a trusted leader of a small rural community.
Behind the camera, The Essex Serpent is set to be directed by Clio Barnes (Dark River). Anna Symon will serve as writer on the series.
Currently, there’s no word on when we might expect to see The Essex Serpent debut via Apple TV+.
