Following a competitive bidding war, Apple came out on top and acquired the rights to create new Peanuts content for their upcoming streaming platform.
Charlie Brown, Snoopy and all of their friends have found a new home at Apple. The deal, in collaboration with DHX Media, will create new series, shorts, and specials featuring the iconic Peanuts characters, due to arrive in 2019.
Part of the partnership between DHX Media and Apple will also cover an original short-form STEM series, exclusive to Apple’s platform, featuring astronaut Snoopy.
Though the content will, primarily, be aimed at the highly lucrative kids television market, the Peanuts franchise has a wide appeal. It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and A Charlie Brown Christmas are considered classics across all age-ranges, and a recent series for Cartoon Network also fared well with an older audience.
Apple have been hard at work curating content ahead of their streaming platform launching. They have already inked a content partnership deal with Seasame Workshop, for a new series of kids programming, as well as working on a new psychological thriller series with director M Night Shyamalan and Rupert Grint.
A specific launch date for the new platform has not yet been announced, so we may still have a little bit more time to wait before Charlie Brown, Snoopy and co. are back in our lives. However, we would not be surprised to see them as one of the series that debuts on the service, when it eventually lands in 2019.
