Update 8/23: Snake Eyes — Paramount’s upcoming G.I. Joe spinoff — has found its Storm Shadow.
Actor Andrew Koji has officially joined the cast of Snake Eyes, the G.I. Joe spinoff film that Paramount hopes to kick-off its newest iteration of its toyline-inspired franchise.
The Warrior actor joins the project as Storm Shadow, the blood brother of Snake Eyes as well as his arch-rival. Based on the comics of the popular series, Storm Shadow is a Japanese-American special forces soldier and member of the fictional Arashikage ninja clan.
Though he was initially friends with Snake eyes, Storm Shadow now works for the main antagonist of G.I. Joe — the terrorist organization known as Cobra.
Andrew Koji will star opposite of Henry Golding, who was previously reported as being cast as titular character Snake Eyes.
Though we don’t yet know details about the story, we do know that Snake Eyes attempts to join a ninja clan to avenge his father’s death. It’s likely that the clan he hopes to join will be the Arashikage clan — the same one which Storm Shadow belongs and is set to inherit.
Original Story: Crazy Rich Asians superstar (and super hunk) Henry Golding is going from romance hero to action hero.
Just like his Crazy Rich Asians costar Awkwafina, Henry Golding is staying booked and busy over the next few years.
The romantic lead of Crazy Rich Asians looks to add another romcom classic under his belt, with the upcoming Last Christmas with Emilia Clarke. He’ll then go on to try his hand in the action thriller genre, starring in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, which stars Matthew McConaughey.
Now it looks like we’ll be able to add action star and hero to his resume, with Variety reporting that Henry Golding is currently in talks to star in the G.I. Joe spinoff Snake Eyes as the titular character.
Paramount first announced the Snake Eyes spin-off in 2018 as a way to breathe new life into their G.I. Joe franchise, though there’d been no word since then. The studio went on to greenlight a new G.I. Joe ensemble film that would likewise add depth to the newly revived franchise.
Snake Eyes is one of G.I. Joe’s most popular characters, a ninja commando who first appeared in the toyline in the 1980s.
Snake Eyes dresses all in black, never reveals his face and never speaks — a trio of traits that made him stand out among the military anti-terrorist soldiers and spies of G.I. Joe. As a character, Snake Eyes sometimes went on solo missions accompanied with his dog, Timber. His archenemy is Storm Shadow, a ninja who also happens to be his blood brother.
Robert Schwentke, who directed The Captain, is set to helm the feature, based on a script from Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter’s War scribe Evan Spiliotopoulos.
The story for the film will center on Snake Eyes on a path to avenge his father’s death by joining a ninja clan — one which also helps him find acceptance.
