Marvel’s mini-webseries Double Agent concludes with a few surprises for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale.
The series, which began in early March, has given viewers an “illicit” behind-the-scenes look at Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Alex, a sneaky double agent working as a production assistant, pursues spoilers and exclusives for his boss, “the Mastermind,” with some success.
But now the jig is up, and Alex is racing to his boss with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale on his thumb drive. Will the epic, two-hour episode make it onto the internet, Wikileaks-style? Or will Marvel and their psychotic security prevail?
As it turns out – and as fans who have attended any Marvel-related convention panel will know – one should never underestimate the comic conglomerate’s security measures. Even the venerable Stan Lee (“Lan Stee”?) who is remarkably game for his rather silly role as the Mastermind, cannot circumvent their power.
“Trust me, it’s not that we don’t want to reveal how the season ends – quite the opposite, actually,” Clark Gregg tries to explain. “But without secrets, these stories lose their magic. That’s why we take these things so seriously.”
But moved, perhaps, by the plight of the fans, Gregg decides to share a sliver of the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale with the world. The scene, which presumably comes from the very beginning of “S.O.S., Part 1,” displays the immediate aftermath of Jaiying’s shocking move at the end of last night’s episode.
Evidently, the immortal woman’s manipulations are having the desired effect. To say nothing of the larger chaos unleashed between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Inhumans Skye is already beginning to fracture between her birth family and the family she made for herself at S.H.I.E.L.D.
The preview for next week’s cataclysmic pair of episodes makes it clear just how much havoc this divide will create.
Well, this is going to be a fun week.
The two-hour Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 finale, “S.O.S.,” will air on Tuesday, May 12 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
