The latest book in Jill Shalvis’ Heartbreaker Bay series turned a ‘I’ve never read anything by her’ reader into a ‘where do I find the rest’ reader in just a couple hundred pages.

About ‘Accidentally on Purpose’
There’s no such thing as a little in love…
Elle Wheaton’s priorities: friends, career, and kick-ass shoes. Then there’s the muscular wall of stubbornness that’s security expert Archer Hunt—who comes before everything else. No point in telling Mr. “Feels-Free Zone” that, though. Elle will just see other men until she gets over Archer… which should only take a lifetime…
There’s no such thing as a little in lust…
Archer’s wanted the best for Elle ever since he sacrificed his law-enforcement career to save her. Their chemistry could start the next San Francisco earthquake and he craves her 24/7, but Archer doesn’t want to be responsible for the damage. The alternative? Watch her go out with guys who aren’t him . . .
There is such a thing as…
As far as Archer’s concerned, nobody is good enough for Elle. But when he sets out to prove it by sabotaging her dates, she gets mad—and things get hot as hell. Now Archer has a new mission: prove to Elle that her perfect man has been here all along…
‘Accidentally on Purpose’ book review
I didn’t know what to expect when I picked up Accidentally on Purpose by Jill Shalvis. I had heard her name in passing a few times, but I was completely unaware of what I was missing in having not read her books before. Anyone who reads romance knows that it’s almost impossible to keep up with all the great writing that is put out book after book, month after month, year after year. We all have at least one author that we’ve always meant to read, but simply haven’t had the time. I didn’t know that one of mine was Jill Shalvis, but I’m happy to say I’ve started on the road to righting that wrong.
The first thing that drew me in upon starting Accidentally on Purpose was the characters. Elle is an actual firecracker of a character. I’ve read a lot of heroines that like to challenge the hero and put up a damn good fight, but Elle is a totally different story. Archer’s alpha-ness radiates off the page, but yet, Elle never seems to cower to it. While everyone else fears Archer and his broody stares, Elle matches him time and time again without batting an eyelash. In fact, the only person immune to his ‘tude is Elle, and she has a way of taming the beast that makes you instantly respect the woman she’s become.
Archer is no slouch either. He may be an alpha-male, private security guy, but he is unlike so many heroes that I have read before. Don’t get me wrong, I have loved my fair share of alpha-male characters, but there’s something about Archer’s brand of it that seems so realistic and genuine that his goodness radiates off the page. He truly wants what is best for Elle from the moment he meets her, and is careful to do what he can to protect her even when he isn’t a part of her life.
Elle and Archer are definitely a pair. From their first fight onward, you can’t help but fall for these two. Their history is fraught with land mines that neither have been willing to navigate for fear of obliterating their existing connection. All it took was one brave action to set their future in motion. I love reading stories where everyone around the main pairing has seen their romance coming for years, even though the main couple espouse that there is nothing going on between them. The drama of Elle and Archer denying themselves the thing they want so much creates such beautiful tension. Tension that we then get to see relieved when it simply cannot be contained a moment longer.
The story is packed full of such genuine, charming characters that I challenge anyone not to fall for them, and I’m not just talking about Elle and Archer. There is an entire cast of characters that I am eager to learn more about. I will definitely be checking out the other Heartbreaker Bay stories, especially after the teases that were littered throughout Accidentally on Purpose. If those stories are half as engrossing as Elle and Archer’s, I’m pretty sure I’ll have them polished off by the weekend.
