That’s right, folks, Shonda Rhimes is bringing another drama to ABC.
At ABC’s Television Network upfront presentation, it was revealed that the new drama was ordered straight to series from Shondaland.
Unlike the previous spinoff, Private Practice, the new spin off won’t involve doctors. This time it will take place in a Seattle firehouse and follows a group of firefighters. The press release from ABC describes, “From the captain to the newest recruit, we follow these brave men and women as they risk their lives and their hearts both in the line of duty and off the clock.”
Speaking about the new series ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey teased, “No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff.”
The spinoff will be written and executive produced by Stacy McKee, with Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers serving as executive producers. ABC Studios will be producing the series.
It sounds like ABC is trying to replicate the success NBC has found with Chicago Fire, Chicago Justice, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med. Or maybe Shonda Rhimes is just starting to run out of original ideas?
