Just a reminder: THIS IS JUST A LEGACIES SEASON 2 THEORY. Unfortunately, I don’t know any insider information and I haven’t had any luck getting in to spy on the Legacies‘s writers room. Yet.
I, like so many of you, am anxious to see new episodes of Legacies. But, in the meantime, I have passed the time by imagining scenario after scenario, trying to figure out what we could see next season. And there’s one thing that Julie Plec has mentioned a few times in interviews since Legacies season 1 concluded that has had me feeling particularly imaginative.
You see, while there are a lot of issues that need resolution in Legacies season 2 after that stunning season 1 finale, including Hope’s return from Malivore, Raf’s getting out of his wolf form, the twins’ Merge issues, Alaric’s unsettled place as headmaster, and Emma/Penelope’s return from their respective departures, there’s one lingering thread that I unintentionally focused on: the return of the monsters.
Julie Plec has been adamant that they want to find a way to keep the monster-of-the-week format that they started in season 1, and I don’t blame them. It kept the plot lines fresh, while also allowing each of our characters a chance to shine. So, naturally, I started thinking about how those monsters could conceivably continue arriving at the Salvatore School doorstep even now that Malivore is, for all intents and purposes, no longer an active threat.
Since we know that Triad isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, it would make total and complete sense for them to send whatever monsters they find in their day to day operations to the Salvatore School for disposal. In Legacies season 1, episode 12, “There’s a Mummy on Main Street,” we watched as Triad was pretty ineffectual against the mummy. This does not inspire confidence in their ability to keep the world safe from the myriad of supernatural creatures that we learned in season 1 most definitely exist.
And they still need a way to neutralize or kill any monsters they come across. Triad has utilized Malivore for this job for decades, possibly centuries (we don’t know all of Triad’s back story after all), and now that Hope has effectively eliminated the pit as an option, Triad is going to have to find a new way to get rid of the monsters they are called to stop.
That is most definitely where Alaric and his school of supernatural teens come in. The younger kids will surely be kept out of this for the time being, but the witches, werewolves, vamps, and a single solitary phoenix may find themselves with a duty to perform.
Whether Triad simply drops by the school’s gate and sneaks these monsters onto the grounds, finds some way to lure the monsters away from Triad headquarters and off toward the sleepy hamlet of Mystic Falls, or makes an arrangement with Alaric to schedule these types of things, I can see Triad holding Alaric and the school responsible for the disappearance of their pit, and wanting to dump all their problems on the Salvatore School doorstep.
