It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
You probably have at least one day off work to park on the couch and fire up Netflix with a few snacks on deck. There are dozens of shows that you have been dying to check out or even re-watch, but you aren’t sure where to start.
There’s definitely not enough time to binge watch all of Breaking Bad, so what can you get up to speed on during your day off?
Of course, there are dozens of options on the streaming service, but here are a few sweet suggestions to get your epic day of relaxation off on the right foot:
Castlevania
The animated series follows monster hunter Trevor Belmont as he joins forces with magician Sypha Belandes and dhampir (half human/half vampire) Alucard to defeat the latter’s father, Dracula, who is on a rampage across Wallachia following his wife’s unjust burning at the stake. It’s a visually engaging, sprightly paced, and engaging series that will leave you craving more.
Castlevania season 2 recently dropped in October 2018 and a 10-episode third season is on the way per Deadline Hollywood, so now is a great time to catch up.
There are only 12 episodes at this point, but it’s a super easy binge with each episode running less than 30 minutes apiece.
Stranger Things
Most Hypable readers have probably checked this series out before, but there is a sizable chunk of TV viewers who have yet to experience this 80’s based, small town sci-fi drama. Stranger Things skyrocketed to almost instant critical and commercial success in 2016 with its eight-episode first season.
I admittedly don’t binge watch many shows, but I devoured the first season of this show in one (very slow) workday. It’s all things nostalgia with tons of homages to 80s pop culture, and follows the story of four boys whose lives are changed forever when supernatural events in a shadow world and a telekinetic girl invade their sleepy Indiana town.
If you haven’t checked out Stranger Things, it is only 17 episodes in at this point, so it’s possible to down in one day and still get a good night’s sleep. Season 3 is expected to drop in 2019, so take a lazy day and get caught up in all the drama.
And, if you have seen Stranger Things before and don’t have anything else to do, it’s worth a re-watch to spot some Easter eggs that you may have missed the first time around.
The Rain
This German post-apocalyptic series managed to make something as simple as rain a terrifying enemy. The Rain is best enjoyed in Danish with English subtitles and follows siblings Simone and Rasumus who spend six years in their father’s bunker before coming into contact with a ragtag young group searching for safety and shelter in a world that has become about survival.
It has a bit of a slow start, but really picks up the speed around episode 3 and only has eight episodes in total. The season finale ends with an interesting twist that will be explored when the series returns in 2019 for season 2.
She-Ra and the Princess of Power
The infamously powerful 80’s cartoon heroine is back and better than ever in Netflix’s 2018 reboot. Teenager Adora (aka She-Ra) leads a rebellion against Hordak and his army.
Magical girl series don’t get enough attention or praise in a superhero-obsessed world (not that there’s anything wrong with superheroes) and She-Ra and the Princess of Power only has 13 episodes that run around 24 minutes apiece. It’s got a lot of heart, great visuals, and a storyline that will inspire kids as well as those who are still kids at heart.
Bodyguard
This show was such a big hit over in the UK that Netflix decided to bring it to US audiences, and I’m personally glad they made it available. Political and police thrillers are a dime a dozen, but Bodyguard shines among the crowd with some serious psychological twists, gritty drama, and enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat for all six episodes.
Bodyguard keeps its foot on the throttle the entire time and wraps up with an ending that begs for another season. It’s one of the best kept secrets on Netflix, but now you know that it belongs on your TV screen immediately.
