As we near the end of the year, take a look at 25 of the best movie posters of 2017.
The quality of a poster can make or break a movie. More than the trailer or the actors starring in the project, the poster will become the face of the film in the eyes of the audience. A good poster should capture the public’s attention and sell the movie. An even better movie poster is able to take the themes of the movie and reflect them in a single image.
Some of the best posters this year like A Ghost Story, Alien: Covenant, and It Comes at Night used dark backdrops as a way of highlighted a central image or figure to evoke a mood for the film. The image of a dog looking into the darkness on the It Comes at Night poster establishes a fear and tension in the audience before they’ve seen a single frame of the movie.
Other movie posters, like Personal Shopper, On the Beach at Night Alone, and Lady Bird all center exclusively on their main characters. They are all captured in a pensive movement, looking somewhere off screen, thinking about something unknown to the audience in hopes of drawing them into the theater to find out.
Movie posters like Mother! and The Shape of Water showed showed stunning inventiveness and artistry. They look more like paintings from a museum than an a poster for a movie.
Some other stand outs include The Florida Project that captures a certain youthful wonder and adventure in its poster that shows a young girl running with a rainbow behind her. Good Time reminded us of the poster for Martin Scorsese’s After Hours, reinventing that poster in new and exciting way.
