Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits U.S. theaters today and is expected to have the highest grossing premiere ever seen in April.
There’s no doubt that Marvel is on a run with their solo superhero films, but Captain America: The Winter Soldier is tracking to become the highest grossing opening weekend to ever see an April release.
Already pulling in $75 million from the studio’s unusual decision to release a predominantly American film in 32 international markets first, Captain America’s sequel is set to nearly double the first film’s weekend box office.
If the $90+ million tracking is to believed, Captain America: The Winter Soldier will beat out Universal’s Fast Five, which currently holds the record with $86 million back in April, 2011.
The Captain America sequel will also set another record for Disney this weekend by opening at 668 Imax screens globally. Not to mention the amount of 3D screenings that will undoubtedly benefit the solo superhero, which opened with less than half the 3D showings back in 2011.
The best part about Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s success is that it’s also getting incredible reviews. As evident by Iron Man 3 and Thor 2, box office totals don’t always mean we’re getting a quality film.

Captain America 2 is being adored by critics and fans alike, with some highly credible sources reporting that it’s better than The Avengers (don’t yell at us, they said it).
Marvel films have seen somewhat of a nosedive in quality since The Avengers hit theaters in 2012 and set our expectations impossibly high, but it looks like the Russo brothers (directors) and actor Chris Evans have delivered us not just another comic book film, but a great movie.
Even better news is that Captain America 3 is moving forward with the same directors as The Winter Soldier, which means we’re only going to be getting even more of this great superhero’s story.
