While promoting The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug in which he stars as Bilbo Baggins, Sherlock’s Martin Freeman teased what’s ahead on series 3 this January.
Be warned of light spoilers!
“There’s a reunion, there’s a marriage and there’s a new villain,” he said to MTV about the three 90-minute episodes airing January 1, January 5, and January 12 on BBC One.
Elaborating further, Freeman spoke about his character John Watson’s state of mind in the premiere episode. “You get to see that Sherlock isn’t dead, obviously. He did survive, as we sort of knew. You get to see where John is. From my point of view, John is in a completely different place. As far as he’s concerned, Sherlock has been dead for two years and he’s moved on. He has someone else in his life.”

That someone is a love interest played by his real life partner Amanda Abbington. “He’s fallen in love and so you see him in that state of mind, and he’s put his friend behind him. And now, sparks fly, I tell you!”
Freeman also touched on the new villain Charles Augustus Magnussen played by Lars Mikkelsen. “[He’s] like a dead man walking. He’s really scary; scary in a different way to Moriarty. Not crazy, crazy like Moriarty was, but sort of just chilling. I think you’ll like him.”
Ahead of Sherlock series 3’s start, catch a special mini episode of the show on Christmas Day which we’re guessing is a prequel of sorts to episode 1.
Freeman was surprisingly open in this interview, but we’re sure there are many surprises ahead.
