The Fifty Shades of Grey movie has been delayed until February 13, 2015, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
The book to film adaptation of E.L. James’ novel was previously set for a debut on August 1, 2014. The six-month delay means that the film can now be marketed as a romantic movie for couples considering a dinner and movie date on the weekend designated for love.
In addition to this announcement, a first look at Christian and Anastasia was shot for an EW cover story:
“Obviously, I want to look good naked,” said Dakota Johnson (who will play Anastasia) about preparing for the role. “I totally understand now why people exercise, because it kind of f—ing feels awesome.”
Added Dornan, “I’m a fairly worldly guy. I grew up in a very liberal place. I’m not saying we had a playroom, but I’m not shocked by [the sex in the book]. It’s essential to tell the story. I can’t believe films that don’t invoke the sexual side of it. So it works for me.”
Production on the film by Jamie Dornan. Dakota Johnson is set to play Anastasia Steele. The character’s mother will be portrayed by Jennifer Ehle.
Though the casting shake up was a bump in the road for the start of filming, the switch to Jamie Dornan was not what caused such a length delay. Rather, Universal wants to have a little more time to work on the film, and from a financial standpoint they’ll benefit from having it placed on Valentine’s Day.
More recently the film has cast Luke Grimes as Christian Grey’s brother and Victor Rasuk as romantic “rival” José.
The film will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
