Deleted scenes from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. prequel Monsters University include an alternate opening to the story.
Since Pixar does not animate the movie until they finish storyboarding it, these deleted scenes are only in storyboard form. Despite this, they’re still interesting to watch because they give you a nice look at the early development process.
In this first clip we see Mike and Sulley taking a drama class at school, but at this point in their relationship they aren’t friends so they can’t work well together.
In another clip we see an alternate opening to Monsters University called “Recon” in which we learn how monsters find out about kids. It was scrapped because it wasn’t directly tied to the story.
While promoting the movie this past June, voice actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman spoke about other alternate openings including one where the former actor voices Mike’s entire family as they drive him to school. At this time we don’t know if this scene is included on the DVD/Blu-ray, but we’re hoping so because it sounds like it’s worth watching.
Other bonus features on the home entertainment release include inside looks at designing characters like Dean Hardscrabble from Monthropology (voiced by Helen Mirren):
Monsters University will be released on October 29th on DVD/Blu-ray. We loved the film and can’t wait to watch it again in high definition. Pixar movies are our absolute favorite Blu-ray releases because of the beautiful animation, and Monsters University shouldn’t disappoint thanks in part to all of the vibrant young monsters.
