Breaking Bad’s final season premiered last night and apparently the world was watching. The show’s final season opened with a record breaking 5.9 million viewers.
AMC may be kicking themselves today, as the final season of their hit show Breaking Bad broke its previous ratings record with last night’s episode, “Blood Money.”
In a surprising turn of events, though, it wasn’t the network that decided to end the show with this final season. The show’s creator, Vince Gilligan, was the one who decided around season 3 that he wanted to end the show with this specific amount of episodes.
“Blood Money” pulled in 5.9 million viewers, which shattered the drama’s previous record of 3 million during last year’s highest rated episode.
What this means is Breaking Bad hasn’t lost any steam with its one-year hiatus. It also means that word of mouth from fans convincing friends and family to catch up on the show prior to the final season was at an all time high during this past year.
This writer is one of those people, watching five seasons in five days in anticipation of Breaking Bad’s final season’s premiere last night. We couldn’t be more happy with the start of the final eight episodes.
It’s rumored that a big reason for this increase in viewership is due to four seasons being available on Netflix in the U.S. and all five previous seasons of Breaking Bad being available for viewers outside the States. This has definitely given fans the chance to catch up for the final season, which from last night’s episode, looks like it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
