Aaron Taylor-Johnson may be joining The Avengers 2, as it’s being reported that he is being eyed as the top choice to play Quicksilver in Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel. As of now, no ink has been put to paper, but the twitterverse is all a flutter with the rumor.
Whedon has been vocal about his excitement over the inclusion of Quicksilver and twin sister, Scarlet Witch in The Avengers sequel. He has said in multiple interviews that they are two of his favorite characters, but the report via The Wrap is the first we are hearing of possible cast decisions.
Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are the children of X-Men villain, Magneto. X-men character rights are owned by 20th Century Fox, but the twins have dual citizenship so to speak. They can be characterized in both the marvel and mutant universes as long as there is no cross referencing in the scripts.
Evan Peters has already been cast as Quicksilver in Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Coincidentally, Peters co-starred with Taylor-Johnson in Kick Ass, which will see a sequel in August. Peters’ role was recast and the actor does not appear in Kick Ass 2.
Talk of Taylor-Johnson’s possible involvement gives some insight into the route Marvel is taking with casting the twins. Audiences already know his face and are used to him playing a superhero (er…pseudo-superhero?)
Taylor-Johnson is currently filming Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla, a reboot due out in May 2014. Production on Avengers 2 has not yet begun and no official word has come from Marvel Studios or Joss Whedon on Taylor-Johnson’s status.
We will keep our eyes and ears open as casting rumors continue to fly.
