Disney has closed LucasArts, the division of the Star Wars-centric company that produces video games. This potentially halts production on multiple projects, leaving their fates up in the air.
In an email to Game Informer, Disney confirms the disbandment of the former video game company LucasArts.
This means that games such as Star Wars 1313 will halt development, perhaps never to be picked up again.
Disney reveals in their statement that they are changing LucasArt from “an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games.” This could mean that more Star Wars games are in the near future, but under a different publisher.
Although they have been publishing Star Wars and Indiana Jones games in recent years, the now Disney-owned company had many other smaller but well-recieved projects throughout the years. LucasArts is also known for some non-Star Wars games such as Maniac Mansion, Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle.
It is upsetting to hear of the disbandment of LucasArts, but it is nice to know that Disney has plans to continue developing future Star Wars franchise titles. LucasFilms, which was purchased by Disney along with LucasArts in October for over 4 billion dollars, will continue its business per usual.
We have fond memories of playing Star Wars: Battlefront 2 in the PlayStation 2’s heyday. We hope that this doesn’t mean that the world will never see the often rumored and desired Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
In recent Star Wars VII news, series creator George Lucas nearly confirmed Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill for the new movie. Also, Disney has felt out to its park visitors to see if they are interested in a completely Star Wars themed amusement park.
What’re your thoughts on this closure news? Are you a big fan of the Star Wars video games, or do you care more about the main film series?
