In an update on their Kickstarter page, Team StarKid have assured fans that their new musical, Twisted, will eventually be released in a digital video format for fans to enjoy worldwide.
A few days ago, Twisted co-writer Matt Lang told Hypable that, at the time of speaking, he could not guarantee Twisted’s release on YouTube, partially due to the differences between this show as a theater piece and their previous musicals, which were, after the group shot to viral fame with A Very Potter Musical, designed to be filmed for an online audience.
This news concerned the StarKid fanbase, who – used to the online nature of StarKid Productions – feared that they may not get a chance to ever see this StarKid show if they aren’t able to make it to Twisted’s live performances.
Due to these concerns, Team StarKid yesterday posted a message to Twisted’s Kickstarter page to further explain their intentions for Twisted as a live show, and to confirm its eventual digital release.
In the past, every show we’ve produced has eventually been made widely available in some form (most of the time for free on youtube, other times as a dvd or digital download). This is a tradition we will continue.
We will be recording the Chicago production of ‘Twisted’, but hopefully this will not be the final production. After the show’s initial run, we would love to see its life continue in a new city, or as a touring production, or as something even greater. The goal is to make this musical available for as many people as possible to see live (and at its best). Then, of course, after the show’s running life, we will make the entire musical available over the internet. It’s what we always have done, we’ve just never tried to run a show for more than two weeks before!
This explanation aligns with what Nick and Matt Lang told Hypable in regards to the difference in what they want for Twisted compared to their past productions. When we spoke to them, they were not able to confirm if an online release would be possible for this show. But it seems as though, after hearing the concerns from their fanbase, they felt a need to confirm that they would eventually make it work! Given that the Kickstarter for Twisted now stands at triple the original goal after only a few days of donations, it’s likely that by the end of the month-long campaign, StarKid will have plenty of money to make the show whatever they want it to be. Some of these funds may go towards the eventual creation of a filmed version.
StarKid did not specify whether the show will be available on YouTube free of charge, or whether the filmed version will only be available for purchase as a digital download or DVD. Either way, worldwide fans will be happy to know that eventually they will be able to watch Twisted in their very own homes.
Keep an eye on Hypable this week for our feature interview with Nick and Matt Lang where they will discuss more details about Twisted and, of course, look back at A Very Potter Senior Year.
Have you donated to the Twisted Kickstarter? What do you think about Team StarKid’s idea to run Twisted as a proper off-Broadway style musical, with a long running life?
