The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced the 70th Golden Globe Awards nominees this morning. The nominations were revealed at an event in Los Angeles at 5:15 a.m. local time.
In film, Lincoln led the 2013 Golden Globe nominations with seven nominations, followed by Django Unchained and Argo with five apiece.
The surprises here come in the form of Richard Gere for Best Actor in a Drama, who has been on the outskirts of the awards race up until now, finally getting recognition for his great performance as a troubled hedge fund manager. The HFPA seemed to adore Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, as it walked away with three nominations for Best Picture Musical or Comedy, and Best Actor and Actress Musical or Comedy for Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt.
Nicole Kidman continued to surge in the Oscar race, picking up another nomination for Best Supporting Actress in The Paperboy after yesterday’s SAG nomination. Having not been able to screen the film for SAG guild members, Django Unchained enjoyed a nice turnout for the Golden Globes, as both Leonardo Dicaprio and Christoph Waltz made it into Best Supporting Actor, along with Best Director, Screenplay, and Picture noms.
In terms of notable snubs, indie darling Beasts of the Southern Wild was completely shut out of the Golden Globes nominations list. Despite getting four nominations apiece, Les Miserables failed to garner a Best Director nod for Tom Hooper, while Robert De Niro was shut out of Best Supporting Actor for Silver Linings Playbook.
Despite a serious awards season push, Matthew McConaughey failed to pick up a nomination for his terrific turn in Magic Mike.
