Google has released its annual Zeitgeist which takes a look at the top searches of the year.
Considering Google is the most used search engine world wide, it provides perhaps the clearest picture of what the Internet has most searched for in 2012.
Of interest to our readers, The Hunger Games trended the highest worldwide in the 2012 Movie category. By Google’s definition, “trending” means “search queries with the highest amount of traffic over a sustained period in 2012 as compared to 2011.” Skyfall, Prometheus, The Avengers, Magic Mike, John Carter, Ek Tha Tiger, Paranormal Activity 4, Taken 2, and Dark Shadows round out the top 10 list.
In the performing artists character, deceased entertainers Whitney Houston and Michael Clarke Duncan took the top-trending searches. They are followed by One Direction, Donna Summer, Lana Del Ray, Carolina Dieckmann, Dirk Bach, Carly Rae Jepsen, Michel Telo, and LMFAO.
The most popular television shows in the United States were Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, The Voice, American Idol, Big Brother 14, X Factor, 666 Park Avenue, Alcatraz, Dance Moms, The New Normal, and Switched At Birth.
Continuing to look at the United States searches, the most searched for celebrity break-ups were Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez, Heidi Klum and Seal, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, and Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis.
The songs of 2012 were many you could predict: Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend,” PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe,” Gotye’s “Somebody that I Used to Know,” and Fun.’s “Some Nights” were the top five.
