Fox and Marvel are discussing a character rights swap due to the Daredevil franchise nearing its deadline of being returned back into the hands of Marvel.
20th Century Fox currently owns the rights to Daredevil, but if it does not figure out a deal by October 10, the character rights will revert back to being owned by Marvel.
Fox is currently in discussions with Joe Carnahan (The Grey) to direct the Daredevil reboot, but he has yet to receive an official offer. Sources close to both parties have said that he appears to be the one for the job.
Luckily for Fox, it owns some character rights that Marvel is interested in.
Variety reports, “Marvel would give Fox more time to make “Daredevil” in return for the rights to use characters from the “Fantastic Four” universe, including the giant, world-devouring supervillian Galactus, rumored to play a key role in future Marvel pics.”
Marvel is also interested in using the Silver Surfer character in future films and Fox owns the rights due to the deal that was made when it purchased the Fantastic Four franchise, which it plans on rebooting with director Josh Trank (Chronicle).
Apparently, Marvel has sent an offer of sorts to Fox and is awaiting a response. Fox is definitely under pressure though, as it has just over a month before it loses the rights to Daredevil.
Do you feel like it’s smart to move some character rights around so that we end up with more films in the future from both companies? Or do you think it’s time to see some fresh ideas hit the theaters instead of reboots filling our weekends?
