A movie based on the 1999 New Zealand teen series The Tribe is in development, and could be finished in 2014.
The Tribe ran from 1999-2003. It followed a group of children struggling to make it in a post-apocalyptic world in which a virus had killed all the adults, causing society to crumble. Left in a world with very little electricity and no social structure, the surviving children formed a tribe-like structure, and our protagonists, The Mallrats, had claimed a city mall as their territory.
The fandom for the show is still very active, with the Facebook fan page having almost 44,000 likes, and there have been both novels and graphic novels released that continue the story after the series was very abruptly cancelled.
Series creator Raymond Thompson has been developing a script for a movie version for a number of years, and today he updated fans to say that despite struggling with personal issues, he has completed the screenplay for the movie, and, “This is being budgeted and scheduled in the hope that we can keep on track for our 2014 release date.”
One of the most iconic parts of the show was probably the wacky half-Flintstones, half-1990s rave party costumes, and we hope this carries on into the film! Aside from the low production values and at times clunky storytelling, The Tribe was actually a very entertaining show with a rich, interesting concept. The idea of children surviving in a world with no adults is of course tried and tested, most famously in Lord of the Flies, but we have no doubt that a The Tribe movie could explore the concept in a new way.
