The short answer is no, but the long answer is “……maybe?”
Be sure to take this with several barrels of salt, but outlets all over the web are reporting that they have “exclusive information” about the status of Spider-Man’s cameo in The Avengers.
You may remember back in July when Amazing Spider-Man producer Avi Arad confirmed that Sony isn’t thinking about plugging Spider-Man into The Avengers, so please note that we are simply bringing other opinions into the mix, not confirming them.
First comes this report from Total Film, and although they are an incredibly trustworthy source the fuzzy details made us wary. Read it for yourself:
According to Jenny Agutter, the first Avengers flick will feature a surprise appearance from Marvel’s greatest superhero. That’s right, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.
“I’m sworn to secrecy. I wasn’t allowed a script until I got there, and when I did I felt like a complete child being on big sets and a huge parking lot full of Winnebagos,” Agutter told The Radio Times.
Agutter went on to say one of those Winnebagos was reserved for Iron Man and one was for Spider-Man. We imagine it’s red and blue, and contains a fridge full of flies and science books.
See what we mean? The presence of a Winnebago that says “Spider-Man” doesn’t necessarily confirm anything. It’s fishy to be sure, but without an insider tip this could mean anything from an inside joke (Caps red and blue colors are awfully similar to the web-slinger’s), to a nickname for a crew member.
Now check out this tip from a “trusted source” over at BestMoviesEverNews (via CBM):
“This will be similar to how Wolverine made a quick cameo in X-Men: First Class and Sony’s going to make sure to promote their new Spider-man movie any way they can. Andrew’s (Garfield) isn’t a widely known actor so they want to get his face on everything, including The Avengers even if it’s for a couple seconds.”
Now, IF (and that’s an “if” so big that it deserves its own press-conference) Spider-Man or Andrew Garfield were to make a cameo appearance in The Avengers, this would be the way to do it. The trouble is, this quote could have come from anywhere and the only official industry voice that we’ve heard so far confirms the contrary. We’re airing on the side of “no cameo for Spidey”, but it’s always fun to speculate so let’s do that.
Let’s look at the facts. We know that Spidey is back in New York and we know that The Avengers will take place in New York. We know that Sony’s The Amazing Spider-Man is slated to come out in early July, just a few months after The Avengers premieres, and we know that Spidey (in the comics) is a pretty integral member of the Avengers.
There is the distinct possibility that Sony drew up some contracts with Disney to increase Peter Parker’s exposure (the Avengers is already slated to be one of the highest grossing movies of all-time, so the product placement value is undeniable), and maybe stick him in the background, but even if he were to make a cameo appearance what could he possibly be doing?
Will he be snapping pictures of the destruction? Will he swing through a single frame wearing the good ol’ red and blue? Will Nick Fury approach him only for Spidey to produce a Sony contract that specifically prohibits him from having any fun? What do you think?
