At the very least the pending Doctor Who Movie has one thing everyone can agree upon: it’s still in development. After that, it looks like the showrunners might all want to get on the same page when commenting to the press.
According to The Sun, Steven Moffat took to his Twitter to express an entirely other view than what David Yates has stated to multiple media outlets. The most recent comments by Yates were made yesterday to the LA Times and MTV. Yates has stated multiple times that the movie version would not follow the TV show canon, and a new Doctor would be sought. Moffat has now responded, or perhaps fired a clear warning shot over the bow:
“There are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment. It’s an incredibly exciting idea to get that magic blue box flying across our cinema screens. But if and when the movie happens it will need to star television’s Doctor Who — and there’s only ever one of those at a time. The brilliant David Yates was talking off the cuff and a little prematurely.”
The tweets no longer appear on Twitter and have now been replaced by two more:
To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.
Movie thing: David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet. You’ve seen the rubbish I talk when I’m cornered.
Oh to be a fly on the wall of the BBC offices, or to sit between Moffat and Yates at the next BBC cocktail party! There certainly seems to be tension in the ranks. These latest comments come on the heals of a tweet sent out by Moffat on November 15th that stated, “Announcing my personal moonshot, starting from scratch. No money, no plan, no help from NASA. But I know where the moon is – I’ve seen it.” Although Moffat hasn’t clarified the Tweet the timing in relationship to the initial reports of the movie would seem to indicate a connection was likely.
What is your take on all of this, merely a simple misspeak or frosty undertones and a public admonition?
