Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat says in a new interview that many people – specifically women – weren’t interested in the 12th Doctor being female.
“I didn’t feel enough people wanted it,” said Moffat about casting a female Doctor. “Oddly enough, most people who said they were dead against it – and I know I’ll get into trouble for saying this – were women, saying, ‘No, no, don’t make him a woman.'”
“When it’s the right decision, maybe we’ll do it,” he added.
We’re not sure where Moffat was looking, but one of our own Hypable readers wrote a lengthy piece against Doctor Who’s next Doctor being a white male – the description of all 12 Doctors to date.
Moffat may be referring to people who love Doctor Who from a sex appeal angle – those people who wish to fawn over a male rather than a female. Real Whovians would argue it’s not about the appearance, of course, and just the character.
Yesterday Neil Gaiman revealed that at one point showrunners had offered the role of the Doctor to a black man, which would’ve been the first time the character was assigned to someone who wasn’t a white male.
Over the weekend Moffat and 11th Doctor, Matt Smith, revealed in a live broadcast that the 12th Doctor will be played by Peter Capaldi beginning later this year. He will have a brief appearance in the Christmas Special before taking on the full role on Doctor Who in 2014.
