The highly anticipated new Zelda Wii U game isn’t on Nintendo’s 2016 release schedule. As Link would say: Hyaaargh! Hungh! Aarggh!
At Nintendo’s E3 presentation back in 2014, fans of the popular Legend of Zelda franchise were blown away by the fantastic concept art and gameplay video for what is promising to be a groundbreaking new Zelda game.
If the presentation video is anything to go by, the new Zelda game for the Wii U is going to be amazing:
As usual, we’ll play as Link, riding Epona through the beautiful landscapes and fighting monsters; eventually, we’ll probably complete some sort of rescue mission, either saving Princess Zelda from Ganon, or helping her defeat him.
But unlike in previous games, the land of Hyrule will be vast and open for exploration, allowing the player to make their own way through the game as opposed to following the more linear dungeon structure we’re used to.
Unfortunately, we’re in for a long wait. Originally, the game was (optimistically) slated for 2015, but when there was no news about it at this year’s E3 conference, it became obvious that we’d have to wait until 2016 at the earliest.

Now, Nintendo has released its 2016 schedule — and while there are several big titles coming out in 2016 (including Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympic Games), the untitled Zelda game is still listed as “TBD.”
A major concern for Zelda fans is that the new installment is marketed as a Wii U game, but Nintendo is of course working on a brand new gaming system titled “NX.”
If they wait much longer with Zelda, won’t it make more sense to release it for the NX? And if that’s what’s holding them back, we could be settling in for a much longer wait than we’d been expecting.
