Zachary Quinto spoke to Stephen Colbert about the tragic, unexpected loss of his Star Trek co-star Anton Yelchin.
The death of 27-year-old Anton Yelchin shocked the world last month. Not only was it unexpected, but it was also a terrifying freak accident: The Star Trek actor was crushed to death by his car, which pinned him to his mailbox pillar after rolling down his driveway.
With Star Trek Beyond opening on July 22, the cast is now beginning their promotional campaign — which, understandably, has a very somber tone.
Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock, spoke about the loss of Anton Yelchin on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, offering a beautiful, heartfelt tribute to his late friend and co-star:
Quinto points out that the promotional campaign was already going to be a bittersweet experience because of the loss of Leonard Nimoy (the original Spock) last year.
“I don’t even know how to talk about it,” Quinto says of Yelchin’s death. “This has just been absolutely devastating for all of us. I think our goal just has to be to celebrate his incredible life, and honor him as much as we can.”
He continues, “It was a terrible loss, not only to us personally, but I think to the industry and audiences. He was such a talent.”
On the bond between the Star Trek cast members, Quinto says, “I think we take it for granted in a lot of ways because we genuinely love each other so much. We are truly intertwined, inextricably, and we always will be. We’re very lucky to have each other, and I think we’re genuinely connected.”
