Producer Simon Kinberg took time out of his crazy Comic-Con schedule to tease fans about what they can expect from the planned sequel.

Speaking to Coming Soon, the producer confirmed that he is currently working closely with returning writer/director team Jane Goldman (The Woman In Black) and Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) on the best way to approach the focus and tone of the second entry in the prequel franchise.

“I can say that the things that we thought worked well in First Class were the characters,” Kinberg said. “Especially the four or five lead characters. The Charles-Erik relationship was obviously incredibly resonant and James and Michael did such an amazing job as those characters. Jen Lawrence and Nick Hoult, that’s a really interesting relationship between Raven and Hank, so we’re really going to be focusing on character and personally I really liked the period aspect of ‘First Class’ so we may well do that” This comes as great news for fans of the originals’ brilliant cast, who have all gone on to have great sucess in their roles since last summers’ release.

He also told fans that Vaugn’s work on the series had given the crew more “license to do some really ambitious things with the sequel.” Could we be seeing links to the Bryan Singer helmed trilogy? Well, that depends. While the First Class series will aim to be respectful to the X 1-3 films, they aren’t afraid to deviate should the story require it. “There may be some places where we don’t line up perfectly but it is something we are very aware of and want to be respectful of and the people who are responsible for those movies–Lauren Schuler-Donner, Bryan Singer and Fox–are all involved.”

Are you excited for a more character driven sequel, or were you hoping for more action?
