Looks like DC has a hit on their hands with Wonder Woman, the first modern super hero movie starring a female!
Deadline reports that WB and DC’s Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot currently has box office tracking for a $65 million opening weekend, which would put it on par with Marvel’s Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger openings ($65.7 million and $65 million respectively). This is very good news, as it signals that the female heroes — which both Marvel and DC have shied away from bringing to the big screen — can perform just as well as their male counterparts.
Of course, DC’s films have had a terrible track record when it comes to critical reviews. Both Batman v Superman and Justice League received horrific reviews, especially when compared to the competition over at Marvel. If Wonder Woman sucks (we certainly hope it doesn’t), it could negatively affect that box office projection.
After Wonder Woman, Marvel will release Ant-Man and The Wasp in July 2018 (Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly) and Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson in March 2019. Let’s hope Wonder Woman’s projected success will add more projects to the pipeline from both studios.
It opens in theaters June 2, 2017. Watch the latest trailer now.
