Being unable to attend Leonard Nimoy’s funeral, William Shatner has taken to Twitter to express his sorrow and regret.
Last week, the world lost a true legend: on February 27, 2015, Leonard Nimoy passed away from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He was 83.
The seasoned actor was best known as Spock in Star Trek, where he starred opposite William Shatner (Captain Kirk).

Their characters’ friendship was legendary, and this carried over beyond the screen: the actors shared a close relationship in real life, too.
Unfortunately, however, Shatner was unable to attend Leonard Nimoy’s funeral, due to a charity commitment.
Shatner has been heavily criticized for this, both by fans and newspapers across the country (the NY Daily Mail dubbed him “Captain Jerk”).
But the actor insisted that there was nothing he could do; his two daughters, however, would be attending in his place.
“I chose to honor a commitment I made months ago to appear at a charitable fundraiser,” Shatner wrote on his Twitter profile. “A lot of money was raised. So here I am; tell me off.”
In lieu of attending in person, Shatner has taken to Twitter to memorialize Nimoy, opening up about their friendship and answering questions from fans.
While we are sure the actor is upset that he was unable to attend the funeral, we’re happy to hear that the charity event was a success. And as fans of Leonard Nimoy, we appreciate being allowed to share in Shatner’s tribute.
Here follows some of William Shatner’s most poignant tweets about his long-time friend and co-star:
Leonard and I seemed to be bound by fate to be friends. We were born 4 days apart. #LeonardNimoy

He took the role of Spock very seriously and I would try and get him to crack a smile while in his persona. It was hard to do. #LeonardNimoy
