Ming-Na Wen and Blair Underwood have hinted that Agent May might be faced with a shocking choice in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3.
According to Wen, the third season might force May to — hold on to your lanyards — part ways with S.H.I.E.L.D.
Though the unflappable agent is renowned for her devotion to the protective agency, Wen says that May is in the process of “realizing over the last two years that S.H.I.E.L.D. isn’t really what she dedicated her life to.”

“There was definitely a lot of corruption to S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as uncertainty now with the Inhumans being brought in by Coulson,” the actress notes. In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3, May will “be figuring out her final decision… and I think Andrew will probably play a part in it.”
Blair Underwood (who plays Andrew Garner, May’s ex-husband) supports Wen’s theory.
“What’s interesting [about season 3] is now May is disgruntled by S.H.I.E.L.D.,” Underwood says. He suggests that this may be a source of ironic tension between the former spouses, who began an attempt to mend their relationship at the end of last season.
“When May came to Andrew with the idea of coming back to S.H.I.E.L.D., he was disgruntled and had left the agency,” Underwood says. “But now he’s back working with them and the Inhumans.”
Unsurprisingly, the superpowered Inhumans are shaping up to be the major source of tension on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3; still, it is both interesting and unnerving to see the schism permeating personal relationships. It would be devastating to see May depart from S.H.I.E.L.D. — especially if this decision took Ming-Na Wen off the series — but with the looming threat of Captain America: Civil War, it’s hard to depend on anyone’s continued loyalty.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 9:00 p.m. on ABC.
