Now that Leonardo DiCaprio has achieved Oscar glory, who should take his place as our favorite actor still in the hunt?
We are all so happy for Leonardo DiCaprio and his Best Actor Oscar. It’s long-awaited and well deserved, but we are sad to see all the Leonardo memes come to an end. The good news is, that with every year come more and more nominations and more actors and actresses that get snubbed from the big win. This got us thinking, who should take Leo’s spot as our new champion? Here are a few of our top contenders:
Who’s our new Oscar-less Leonardo?
Amy Adams
This lovely lady has been nominated five times since 2006. Her work in Junebug, Doubt, The Fighter, and The Master all gained her nominations for Best Supporting Actress, and she recieved her sole Best Actress nomination for her role in American Hustle in 2014. Her five nominations puts her ahead of even Leo, as he won on his fifth outing to the Oscars. She is more than deserving, as she has done some truly beautiful work with a host of different directors and in a true variety of roles. There’s always a chance that Nocturnal Animals, due to be released in 2016, will be the one to get her Oscar glory, but it’s never easy to predict these things this far out.
Glenn Close
Glenn Close has been in this game far longer than just about anyone else we could think of. She has been nominated six times without a win, her latest nomination coming from Albert Nobbs in 2011. Her first nomination was in 1982, so she has lasted more than 30 years in the business without holding the iconic statuette. A peek at her upcoming projects has us wondering if there’s a chance at Oscar glory for her work in What Happened to Monday? or The Girl with All the Gifts. Only time and the Oscar voters will tell.
Mark Ruffalo
There are a host of actors with three nominations under their belt including Matt Damon, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and Edward Norton, but Mark Ruffalo is someone we think we should keep our eyes on. His career is red hot, and he’s been choosing projects that have gotten attention in all the best ways. In addition to his critical success, he is also a part of one of the biggest movie blockbuster events of our lifetimes with his work as the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Maybe we should start pulling for him. He’d look very nice in the memes.
Bradley Cooper
In the world of director/actor pairings, few these days has been as repeatedly successful as that of Bradley Cooper and David O’Russell. In fact, it’s a toss up whether Jennifer Lawrence or Bradley Cooper is his better collaborator. Sure, Lawrence won for her work in Silver Linings Playbook, while Cooper was only nominated, but they’ve been together for all of O’Russell’s most recent projects, and we can’t wait to see what he comes up with next.
Matt Damon
Oh, Matt Damon. So, technically he’s won an Oscar, but as that was for screenwriting, we think it’s still completely valid to champion him for an acting award. His work in The Martian this year proves that he still has more in him than just another Bourne movie. He has projects coming up with Oscar winners George Clooney and Alexander Payne, so there are more than enough opportunities for him to turn his 3 acting nominations into a fourth and possibly a win. Plus, he’s Matt Damon, who doesn’t love him?
Jacob Tremblay
So, Jacob Tremblay is new to this whole award show thing, what with Room pretty much being his debut project, but he quickly became one of our favorite parts. Watching him absorb all the glamour and fun of the Golden Globes, the People’s Choice, and the Oscars has been a delight. In addition to how much fun we’ve had watching him enjoy the glamour, he’s one extremely talented kid. His performance in Room is nothing short of mesmerizing. We are eager to see what this kid has in store for us as his career continues to unfold. He has some promising projects coming up, and we will definitely be keeping our eye on him no matter what.
