A week of denial and now it is finally the time to accept the fact. Wes Gibbins is dead, but who killed him?
It’ll be two months before HTGAWM returns, and until then I need something to satiate my mind. I need to find Wes’ killer before the show tells me. From the least plausible to most plausible, here are my four suspects who might have had a hand in the murder and the arson.
Who killed Wes on ‘HTGAWM’?
Frank Delfino
This is the most obvious one and that is why I believe the showrunners will not go through it, but I am pretty sure the first few episodes back will show Frank as a usual suspect only to pull the rug from underneath us.
However, if they do go through, it would be fun to see the altercation between Frank and Wes where both of them hate each other: Wes, because Frank killed Wallace Mahoney and now is trying to come between him and Laurel, and Frank, simply because Wes stole Laurel.
Bonnie Winterbottom
When Annalise called Bonnie from the prison, she had just entered her house. Where was she? Maybe she also had been called to the Keating House.
She enters the Keating House, but no one is there. She waits for a while and Wes shows up. Wes tells her everything about the DA and the deal they’ve offered him.
Now let us flash back to the kissing scene between her and Annalise and further flash back to when Frank was about to pull the trigger. She didn’t want Frank to kill himself because that would hurt Annalise, by which I think she meant that if Annalise involved herself in any other murder, it would damage her. But if she took the matters into her own hands, Annalise would know nothing and what Annalise didn’t know wouldn’t hurt her.
This was also the guy who started the vicious chain of unfortunate events so Bonnie had to save Annalise from him. She pulls out a gun (untraceable, of course) and kills Wes. As she is trying to get rid of the body, someone enters the house, someone who wants to blow the house up (Simon Drake?). So, she hides Wes’ body somewhere and bolts just as the guy is planting explosives.
This theory is also possible because Bonnie has gone to extreme measures before to save Annalise, (remember Rebecca?), hence killing Wes wouldn’t be much of a problem to her.
D.A. Renee Atwood
Nate had just broken up with her, so as cunning a person as she is, she follows and sees him enter the Keating House. It infuriates her to see Nate leaving her and going straight back to Annalise’s. After some time, Nate leaves the house. She grabs her gun from the dashboard (untraceable) and enters the house (stupid Nate obviously left the door open). Slowly she walks around the house in a similar fashion to Nate’s. She doesn’t find anyone, but she isn’t one to give up either, so she makes her way to the kitchen. As she was about to disconnect the gasoline pipe, Wes enters. Unsure what to do, she pellets him. It’s done, and now she has to go through with the plan. She disconnects the gasoline pipe, sneaks out of the house and drives away. Any minor spark and the house will go boom, and she is fairly certain that it will be Annalise.
Even though this is just a theory and I have no suppository evidence like the others to back it up, I like this plausible scenario because then Wes’ death, ultimately would be Annalise’s fault. It would bring a new dimension to Annalise’s character, trying to cope after losing another person she cared about while she knows that she was unintentionally responsible for his death. And it would also be the epic ‘pulling the rug’ from under the viewers who wouldn’t have taken her for a suspect at all.
Connor Walsh
We’ve already had Wes and Asher commit a murder, so doesn’t it seem suspicious that there is no murder this season committed by one of the Keating 5? The timeline shown by the final episode shows Connor waking up next to Thomas but also doesn’t justify the copious amount of time it took for Connor to show up at the hospital. And how did he know to be at the hospital? Remember, he had no phone on him. Sure, he might have a TV and saw the news about the Keating House, but where was he all that time?
My guess is that Connor runs into Wes, but at the Keating House. Wes was there for all intents and purposes, but Connor was there just because he had nowhere to go. Wes tells him all about the day and lets it slip out that the DA’s trying to make a deal with him. This causes Connor to lash out. Not only was Wes the reason that they have become accomplices in a murder, now he’s trying to cut a deal and be free while they go to prison. Wes tries to explain, but the already damaged Connor wouldn’t listen twice. The trophy was just lying down on the ground. Connor tackles Wes and he falls head first onto the trophy. An accident, but a murder nonetheless.
Even though this doesn’t explain how the house burned down, I’d prefer this over the other three, as it would have an impact none of the above would. The people killed in previous seasons were strangers, but this time, it was a friend. Connor’s friend. It definitely would be interesting to see the fallout from this reveal. Does Annalise try to save Connor? She has to, or else Connor will spill all the beans. What will Asher, Micheala, Laurel and Oliver’s reactions be? Since there are lots of aspects to be considered, it seems the most plausible to me.
