With all the hype being made over Suzanne Collins’ “The Hunger Games,” it made me think about what if the Hunger Games were real? How would society react? Would we sit and watch them like the people in The Capitol? Or would we try to put a stop to it? I personally don’t think we would let it slide.
Although Suzanne paints a dark picture of a society ridden with people who seem to be ok with children killing each other, I just don’t see that flying in real life. I do agree with her message; People get so caught up in reality shows now a days like the Bachelor/the Bachelorette, 16 & Pregnant, or Toddlers in Tiaras; Shows that feed off people’s struggles and sometimes their miseries. It’s hard not to stretch that to something as drastic as watching children fight to the death for entertainment.
But how can that be? There are real life examples going on right now, like Joseph Kony and his child armies in Africa or the US wars in Iraq where children are seen doing unspeakable things, that we as a people do not stomach. We gather together and make loud protests to our varying governments until change happens and things such as these finally stop.
So, what if the Hunger Games were real? I get where Suzanne got her idea, I just don’t think we as people could ever tolerate a “Hunger Games” in any society. I love her books, I love the way she writes, and I agree that sometimes things in different places can seem bleak. Fortunately though, I have an optimistic way of thinking; That people just wouldn’t sit back and knowingly let such awful things happen right in front of them.
What do you think about the message in the book and whether or not we would ever really create a “Hunger Games” scenario?
