For the third straight weekend, The Dark Knight Rises was victorious at the domestic box office, as Total Recall severely underperformed as the film’s only serious competition.
#1. The Dark Knight Rises
Theaters: 4,242
Budget: $250 million
CinemaScore: A
Rotten Tomatoes: 87%
Hypable Grade: A-
After all the distraction (and rightfully so) surrounding the first two weekends for The Dark Knight Rises, it seems the film has finally settled in to its typical box office dominance, as it only dropped 41% in its third weekend, as it has now grossed $733 million worldwide.
The film also had a solid $8,000 theater average on the domestic side of things this weekend, as audiences clearly went out in support of the film, rather than the second placed Total Recall, which some may say has a similar target demographic. Warner Bros. has got to be a little relieved after this weekend, as the film’s $250 million budget made a strong performance absolutely necessary.
Have you seen The Dark Knight Rises more than once? Do you plan to?
#2. Total Recall
Total Recall is this weekend’s big underperformer, as it managed to gross just $500,000 more than its predecessor in 1990. Now that’s a miserable start! With a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a rather dreadful “C+” CinemaScore, there doesn’t appear to be much hope domestically. Now the film has to pray it can muster a great overseas performance, and trust the apparent drop in reported budget from $200 million to $125 million.

#3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days
This franchise seems to be going downhill, as Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days mustered $7 million less than its two predecessors. Its only saving grace is a reported $22 million budget and the hope that the family dollar will continue to support it the next few weeks before school starts. Other than that, not much to say on the subject. Did you see it?
#4. Ice Age: Continental Drift
The story with Ice Age: Continental Drift continues to be its international draw, as it has now grossed $715 million worldwide. With an unreported budget, I can assure you the film is a success regardless of the budget. Fox will just hope that the next installment fares a little better domestically.
#5. The Watch
After two weekends The Watch is still fighting an uphill battle, with just $25 million grossed on a pretty steep budget of $68 million. Oh well, you can’t get ’em all.
#6. Ted
The wonder-bear continues to alight the box office, as Ted really appears to be the surprise hit of the summer. Unsurprisingly, Universal apparently has ordered a sequel.
#7. Step Up Revolution
Step Up Revolution continues to be the underperformer of the franchise, as it has yet to gross back its budget.
#8. The Amazing Spider-Man
The drop in gross continues to be minimal after its drop off during its second weekend, but at this point The Amazing Spider-Man is making too little domestically to put much of a dent in that budget. From here on out it’s up to the international dollar…
#9. Brave
Again, the story with Brave is that it’s still in limited release overseas, so the story on this film isn’t done yet for Pixar.
#10. Magic Mike
Did I mention Ted is the surprise hit of the summer? Because Magic Mike is going to have a pretty good argument to claim that spot. $110 million domestically on just a $7 million budget. Now that’s what I call a return on the dollar. Did you hear Soderbergh and Tatum financed this themselves? Yep, that money’s going into their collective pockets.
There we have it. The Dark Knight Rises is victorious again. Next week it faces some serious competition in The Bourne Legacy, however. Why don’t you take a stab at predicting which film will be triumphant in the comments?
