It looks like Watchmen could be the next comic book series to get the television treatment!
Deadline reports that HBO is currently in very early talks to develop an adaptation of the popular comic book series with Damon Lindelof at the helm.
If the proposed series gets the green light, it would mark Lindelof’s second project with the premium cable network. The showrunner recently wrapped work on HBO’s sci-fi drama The Leftovers, whose series finale aired on June 4.
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter points out that this isn’t the first time that HBO has circled the idea of adapting the popular DC comic for television. In fact, HBO entered preliminary discussions to green light a series based on Watchmen back in 2015.
At the time, Batman v Superman director Zack Snyder, who also directed the 2009 big screen version of Watchmen, was attached to helm HBO’s adaptation, but it doesn’t look like Snyder will be involved in HBO’s latest efforts to revisit the idea of a Watchmen television series.
Created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, DC Comics’ Watchmen was first published in 1986. The series takes place in an alternate 1985 America and follows Rorschach, a masked vigilante who stumbles upon a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes after one of his old buddies is murdered.
