Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs shows plenty of promise. Evidently, that promise wasn’t enough for the gaming company to release it on time.
Watch Dogs is a third-person shooter set in a futuristic Chicago. Players manipulate technology to fight crime in an underground Batman fashion.
In an interview with IGN.com, the North American president for Ubisoft Laurent Detoc detailed the decision behind delaying Watch Dogs.
Detoc cited conversations with coworkers where “you have to say, ‘this is in the best interest of the product, to do this,’ because at the end of the day we’re going to be able to do this extra fine tuning.”
Even though the delay shocked players anticipating the hyped up Watch Dogs, developers at the company were equally surprised.
“I’ll tell you, at Gamescom, everybody was looking each other in the eye thinking we would be there at launch,” Detoc said.
In speaking highly of the third person action/adventure-shooter, Detoc claims, “I actually believe that Watch Dogs could have ended up being the best-rated game on next gen if it came out at launch. We wanted it to be even higher.”
When asked when to expect gameplay footage of the revamped Watch Dogs, Detoc teasingly responds, “When we have something good to show again.”
Watch Dogs will release sometime mid-2014 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.
