The Walking Dead season 5 has been an exciting run. From the discovery of a genuinely good sanctuary to a surprising number of deaths, this season has kept us on our toes.
But it’s not over yet! The Walking Dead concludes this Sunday and is set to be a memorable (and 90 minute!) finale. In light of the penultimate episode which aired March 22, here are five moments we hope make it into the finale.
The death of Pete
We have a fun and dark idea for this one: What if Carol and Sam teamed up to kill Pete? We know that Carol feels invested in this issue because she was abused when her husband was alive, and Sam has been going through hell as he and his mother live with a horrible man. If Carol realizes there are no other ways of getting rid of Pete, she could talk Sam into killing him (And as a reward, she’ll bake more cookies).
This may be a good way to skirt around the rules Deanna laid down for Rick in episode 15. Would the Alexandria leader really punish or exile Sam if he killed his own father? She couldn’t do anything to him because he’s just a kid! If Sam decides he can’t do it, then Carol can do it and have Sam take the blame.
Sam killing Pete would be a classic Walking Dead shocker, similar to Carol deciding to kill Lizzie. Problems must be eliminated – right, Carol?
Rick’s fate
Previews for this Sunday’s Walking Dead season 5 finale indicate a large portion of the episode will focus on Deanna deciding what to do with Rick, who went berserk during yesterday’s episode.
In this clip from episode 16, Maggie sticks up for Rick and pleads with Deanna to remember her initial instincts about their group.
We hope Deanna will realize Rick and his team are a good group of people (certainly Michonne’s silencing of Rick in episode 15 will help, but not much else is working in their favor). In light of Rick’s fistfight with Pete it’s fair for Mr. Grimes to face some jail time, and for the people of Alexandria to peacefully voice their concerns, but anything else would be going too far.
The Wolves
Signs of the Wolves’ presence around Alexandria were very strong on last week’s episode, and it looks like we may finally see some of the group’s members in the season finale as Daryl and Aaron continue to track them. While we doubt we’ll get many answers about the group in the finale, they’ll be a great cliffhanger as we start to look toward season 6. One of the biggest questions: Is this group similar to Negan’s Scavengers in the comics?
Morgan
Morgan made a surprise appearance in the mid-season 5 finale but has since gone unnoticed. He knows Rick was planning a trip to Washington D.C., but we still don’t know if Morgan decided to head that way himself.
Presumably he’ll cross paths with Rick again, but when? Surely that moment has to come in the season finale. We need payoff for that surprise!
Death to Father Gabriel
We hope Maggie does something about Father Gabriel in light of what he told Deanna in episode 14. The clip above shows Maggie and Deanna speaking with one another, so hopefully Maggie will use that one-on-one time to voice concerns about Gabriel.
Gabriel’s role seems to have run its course at this point, so maybe now is the time for him to die. On the other hand, Rick’s group is walking on thin ice right now. It wouldn’t look good if they killed one of their own.
