Our Walking Dead recap of season 4, episode 3 “Isolation” breaks down the major events of tonight’s episode including a surprise revelation!
Last week’s cliffhanger: Two of the sick humans – one was Tyreese’s new love interest – were dragged outside and burned to death by a mystery criminal. Let’s look at what happened in tonight’s storyline…
- Fits of anger. Picking up where we left off last week, Tyreese yells at Rick about the deaths and physically assaults Daryl and Rick. This ignites Rick, who swings back at Tyreese and brings him to the ground. Hershel patches Rick up later and tells him to not let this stop him from being a role model because he still needs to keep people safe. As Tyreese buries his lady Karen, Rick comes up and apologizes and the feelings are mutual. Despite this, Tyreese is serious about finding who’s responsible and believes it should be their top priority.
Tyreese agrees to go out on a supply run (which we’ll discuss later), but just before that he asks Carol to look after Sasha while he’s gone. She agrees, but at this point we as viewers started feeling like it was Carol who killed Karen. Our suspicions are all but confirmed when Carol gets emotional after Tyreese walks away. At the end of the episode Rick asks her point black if she’s the killer, and in the most nonchalant way possible she says yes. - The sickness. Recurring character Sasha, who was upgraded to a regular this season, seems to have fallen ill with a sickness similar to what the infected have. She’s adamant about beating it. “I’m gonna be okay,” she tells Hershel and Glenn with authority. Entering the doctor’s cell to get help, all she finds are sick humans and the doctor himself under the weather. At a counsel meeting, Hershel says that it’s not the illness that causes these people to die — it’s the symptoms. He then suggests a place fifty miles away where they can find new medicine. In this meeting, we see Glenn become sick too.
- Carl gets quarantined – for a moment. Hershel suggests the young kids, including Carl, get quarantined because they are the most vulnerable. Rick asks Carl to look after everyone. Later, while the son is doing his rounds, he finds Hershel trying to go out into the woods. He doesn’t want Hershel to go into the wilderness without him, so he says he’ll come along. While outdoors, Hershel compliments Carl’s maturity.
Maggie finds Hershel outside and scolds him for not being quarantined, and in response he reveals why he was out. He has a remedy using leaves he can make that he learned from his wife to help the sick. After an impassioned speech, he convinces Maggie and Rick to let him do it.
Hershel first gives the doctor his concoction. The doctor thanks him with some lovely blood coughed up all over Hershel’s face. Our new, temporary doctor then goes to take care of Glenn. - The supply run. Daryl warns that all journeys outside of the prison end in a zombie attack, and this one was no different. While on the road with Michonne, Bob, and Tyreese, a voice on the radio is heard. Distracted by tuning the dial, they run straight into a slew of zombies. Daryl hits the breaks because there’s a gigantic group of walkers ahead – perhaps one of the largest groups we’ve ever seen on the show. The car gets stuck when running over zombies and they make a run for it. Tyreese gets left behind momentarily because he’s taking out his anger on zombie after zombie but quickly catches up.
The next episode of The Walking Dead season 4 will air Sunday, November 3 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC. Throughout this week we’ll bring you previews of the episode as they’re released.
We want to hear your ‘Walking Dead’ recap: What did you think?
We were somewhat surprised by Carol’s decision to kill the two who were infected, but given her recent knife lessons we don’t think it comes as too much of a shock. We think Hershel’s remedy will save at least Sasha and Glenn, though at some point this season a big character is going to have to die for either this reason or another.
