The Walking Dead mid-season 5 premiere airs tonight, and after the incredibly dramatic mid-season finale, we take a look at what to expect in season 5’s new episode.
With The Walking Dead mid-season 5 premiere airing tonight, Rick and the group have been looking very lost in the TV clips and previews. We have to wonder what this episode will look like, considering Beth has just been killed, and the rest of the group is going to find out that Eugene had been lying about knowing how to cure the zombie apocalypse.
If you’ve watched the first two minutes of the episode, which was released earlier this week, we see Rick talking to Noah about Beth. Noah tells Rick that Beth was going to come with him to help find his family back in Virginia. Rick seems fairly interested in taking the group to Virginia, but other than hearsay, there isn’t much of a reason to go there.
Not to mention, Virginia is 530 miles away from where they are right now. That’s a heck of a hike for some people who are starving, injured, and we imagine Maggie and Daryl have been incredibly affected by Beth’s recent death. Although, DC was 638 miles, so at least Virginia is closer than their original destination.
The finale showed Daryl carrying Beth’s lifeless body out of the hospital, where we saw Maggie fall to her knees after realizing her sister was dead. Will they even explain to her how she was killed? Maggie had just been told by Michonne that her sister was alive, and just hours later she sees her with a bullet wound to the head.
This leaves our group with a lot of questions. Their plan was to head up to Washington so that Eugene could put his “plan” into action, but that’s done, and now we have at least two members (three with Noah) who are grieving for the loss of their beloved sister and friend.
Convincing them to head to Virginia just because Noah wants to go there on the off chance that some of his family is still alive with some of the others seems like a difficult task. Daryl especially, who will most likely have turned into either incredibly depressed Daryl, or incredibly pissed off Daryl. He may be an even bigger question mark than Maggie, due to the fact that Beth was really who turned his attitude around after the loss of the jail as their home. Maggie still has Glenn to keep her up on her feet, but Daryl may feel alone once again.
They spent a lot of time together, and Daryl may not be willing to go any further, as he’s most likely sick of losing the people he loves most. Many thought that he and Beth may be romantically involved, but if that wasn’t the case, he most likely thought of her as a little sister, which could be even worse for him emotionally. We know he has serious mental trauma already, and this is just adding insult to injury.
He and Maggie aren’t likely to grieve together, so it may split the group a bit emotionally, which is another hurdle that Rick will have to cross as he attempts to move the group somewhere safe. It’s hard to know how the group will react to all that happened during the mid-season finale, many may have lost hope that there is a safe haven left anywhere in the world.
Eugene’s lie, despite how ridiculous it sounded at times, gave many of the members hope that there was something else out there, which at least kept their feet moving forward. Now that they’ve been let down again, it’s hard to imagine they jump back up on the horse and head 500+ miles to Virginia.
But, they have to head somewhere, as the show wouldn’t go very far if they found themselves camping in the woods once again. This first episode should be very interesting, and we should find out quickly where they plan to go, and how much Beth’s death and Eugene’s lie changed things.
From the footage we’ve seen, it seems as though the plan will be Virginia for now, which is rumored to be where the Alexandria Safe Zone storyline will begin. This is a place from the comic, so there’s probably a lot of new storylines to go off of if they do make it there.
While it’s a long trip to Virginia, it’ll be a nice change of scenery, and we can’t wait to tag along for the ride with our favorite characters from The Walking Dead. Let’s just hope most of them are left alive by the time they reach another “safe zone.” Andrew Lincoln has said that they actually have more people with them by the end of this season than they ever have before. So, it’ll be interesting to see which new characters join the show.
Be sure to tune into The Walking Dead tonight at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC. We’ll have our recap and thoughts up as soon as the episode airs.
