Following the successful Kickstarter campaign for the Veronica Mars movie, Rob Thomas has enlisted former staff writer Diane Ruggiero to co-write the script.
Veronica Mars fans rejoiced when, almost 10 years after the end of the cult TV series, Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring the series to the big screen.
The campaign was a huge success, and has raised more than $5.7 million (breaking Kickstarter’s record). Several actors have confirmed that they will reprise their roles in the movie, including Jason Dohring (Logan) and Max Greenfield (Deputy Leo).
Now that the movie is actually happening, Rob Thomas is focusing on the actual script, and tells HitFix that he’s needed to bring in former Veronica Mars staff writer and co-executive producer Diane Ruggiero to help him out.
Before the Kickstarter was even launched, Thomas already had the outline and the first act written. But, “I had no idea the craziness that would ensue once we launched,” he admits. “The day we launched, we received 20,000 emails. The press requests and questions that arose about the specifics of the campaign was almost a full time job.”
So Thomas reached out to Ruggiero, who he calls his “right hand writing the series,” to help him finish the script. “It felt good to have someone who knew the voices as well as I did,” he admits, and adds, “we were both in a comfort zone, both writing this show and writing with each other.”
Ruggiero wrote 17 episodes of Veronica Mars, including the fan favourites “Leave it to Beaver,” “A Trip to the Dentist” (which Thomas calls “our high-water mark” episode), and the series finale “The Bitch is Back.”
She has gone on to serve as a producer on Dirty Sexy Money, The Ex List, and Cupid, and is currently a consulting producer on Bates Motel.
This seems like good news! With two seasoned Veronica Mars writers passing ideas back and forth, we’re sure this movie is only going to get even better!
