At a time when we need it most, the People’s Choice Awards became a vehicle for celebrities to deliver Meryl Streep-like speeches calling for solidarity and diverse media.
Wednesday night marked the annual People’s Choice Awards ceremony, which brought the usual highs and lows and accolades for Ellen DeGeneres, who now holds the record for winning the most PCAs in history. ?
More and more frequently, these award shows also become vehicles through which celebrities can deliver important, empowering messages. Presumably taking the lead from Meryl Streep at the Golden Globes, it seems the veil of ambiguity has finally dropped away, allowing for stars to truly speak their minds about the current political climate.
Most notable was Tyler Perry’s speech, who accepted the favorite humanitarian award. It followed an awkward moment in which Kristen Bell’s teleprompter went down (she gracefully recovered), but nonetheless resonated with both audience members and viewers:

“As I look at the state of the world, and the state of our country and everything that is going on… it is so important that we know that no matter how dark it gets, we have to be light for each other,” said Tyler. “I hope I have become a balance keeper. When I see all this darkness in the world, all I want to do is bring some balance. Bring some light, shed some light for one another.”
Both Jennifer Lopez and Blake Lively empathized the need for strong women on screen, with Lively — who was accepting an award for her role in The Shallows — noting, “you voted for girl power.”
