Twitter announced in October that they’re shutting down Vine, but today the social media network announced what’s next for the app, existing Vines, and popular creators.
In a blog post on Medium, Vine revealed that their app will become a simple camera app that continues to let you shoot six-second, looping videos. But instead of these videos going into a Vine feed, you’ll now be forced to send them to either Twitter or your phone’s camera roll.
The new app will be called Vine Camera. If you post the Vine on Twitter the video will continue to loop, but they did not reveal if the videos would loop when you watch them from your phone’s camera roll. The only way this could work is if, when the video is exported, it makes multiple copies of the Vine in one video file.
Vine users will be able to notify their followers of where they can be found on Twitter, so fans can stay up-to-date on their creators once the app closes in January. You’ll also be able to download your existing Vines before the social network shuts down.
Finally, Vines that’ve already been posted online (with URLs that start with “vine.co”) will still work.
More information can be found on this FAQ page. Twitter/Vine has yet to set an official shut down date for the existing Vine app.
The news of Vine’s closure came as a shock in October due to the popularity of the app. These transition plans seem to indicate that Twitter wants to essentially absorb the functionality of Vine into Twitter.
How long will it be until the ‘Vine Camera’ functionality exists within the Twitter app itself?
