Breaking Dawn – Book Plot

The fourth and final book of the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn is divided into three parts. Parts one and three are written, like the three previous books, from Bella’s perspective. Part two is told from Jacob’s perspective. The readers were introduced to reading from Jacob’s perspective briefly at the end of Eclipse.

In Part One, Bella is preparing to marry her true love, Edward, but she can’t help but feeling guilty over Jacob running away. The wedding goes according to plan with Alice creating a beautiful day for her brother and Bella. Bella’s day is made perfect with the return of Jacob to whom she apologizes to. Despite his emotional pain, Jacob wants to see Bella happy, but on learning she plans to sleep with Edward while still human, he turns violent. Bella worries about whether or not they will ever be best friends again, but she has made her choice and her and Edward leave for their honeymoon.

They go to an island off the coast of Brazil called Isle Esme and they make love for the first time. Edward refuses to do so again while she remains human as he has caused her to bruise, however Bella’s persistence pays off when he finally agrees to be with her again. Soon Bella begins to feel hungry and be sick and she soon realises she is pregnant. Edward becomes concerned for Bella’s well being after hearing similar stories where the mother dies from a local woman who believes Edward to be a vampire. Bella has grown close to the baby she is carrying and upon knowing Edward’s plan to kill their baby, she contacts Rosalie to help protect her.

In Part Two, Jacob learns Bella has returned from her honeymoon and assumes she has been changed into a vampire after learning Carlisle had informed Charlie that she was ill and is quarantined. His anger causes him to turn to his werewolf pack for help, but Sam, the alpha, will not do what Jacob wishes. He leaves alone to confront the Cullen’s and learns of Bella’s pregnancy and that the baby is quickly growing with her and she is looking months pregnant instead of only days. Edward is at odds with Rosalie as the baby is clearly hurting Bella, but she is protecting her from him and anyone else who tries to get close to her. Jacob in shock, inadvertently informs his pack of her condition leading them to the decision that the fetus must be killed, therefore requiring they kill Bella. Jacob disagrees, but he is commanded to join his pack by alpha Sam.

Jacob, the rightful alpha of the Quileute pack, therefore splits from the them and is joined by Leah and Seth Clearwater. They inform the Cullen’s of the werewolves plan and help them guard Bella, but this proves difficult for Jacob and his new pack as they can no longer hear their former packs thoughts. As the fetus continues to grow, Bella drinks blood after Jacob sarcastically mentioned it could help. Bella finds it appetizing and her condition improves. Edward begins to hear the thoughts of his baby and realises the baby loves Bella and his feelings towards his unborn child change leaving Jacob feeling distraught.

Soon after Bella gives birth breaking her back and many other bones as well as losing massive amounts of blood. Once the baby, called Renesmee, is born, Edward injects Bella with his venom to save her, but in the process it will change her into a vampire. Jacob believes she is dead and in his anger instinctively blames Renesmee. He decides to kill her, but instead he imprints on her, meaning the Quileute werewolves cannot touch her.
Part Three reverts back to the perspective of Bella who, after a painful transformation, has now become a newborn vampire. Bella enjoys her new outlook on life with her newfound strength, senses and speed and she is able to showcase remarkable self control for a newborn and is eager to hold her daughter, Renesmee.

She goes hunting with Edward for the first time providing Bella with the opportunity to test her abilities and while hunting she is amazingly able to resist the scent of human blood nearby. She returns to the Cullen’s house and sees Renesmee who has grown at an alarming rate and has the ability to show people her thoughts by touching them. When she finds out Jacob has imprinted on Renesmee, Bella reacts angrily and attacks Jacob. Edward and Bella enjoy spending time with Renesmee and time alone in the cottage given to them by Esme, but when the vampire Irina from the Denali Clan misidentifies Renesmee as an “immortal child,” a child who has been changed into a vampire, she alerts the Volturi.

As “immortal children” cannot control themselves, to create one is against their laws and death befalls their maker. The Volturi plan to kill the Cullen’s and Renesmee who do everything they can to prove their innocence by asking fellow vampires to be witnesses stating she is not an ‘immortal child’. As the Volturi arrive, they are faced with the Cullens, the Denali Clan and many other vampires as well as Bella who has developed the ability to to shield others from harm which has developed from her human ability to have mind privacy. The Volturi soon realize they have been misinformed and kill Irina and while they are still deliberating on whether to kill Renesmee, Alice, who Bella thought had run away with Jasper, returns with Nahuel, a half human, half vampire like Renesmee.

As he has caused no danger to anyone before, the Volturi leave and a confrontation is aborted. As celebrations begin, Edward, Bella and Renesmee return home to their cottage. Bella decides to try something with her shield ability with Edward by placing her hands on his face and pushing her shield away allowing Edward to hear her thoughts for the first time. They are peacefully happy and can now think of living their lives forever together.
