Lionsgate and Stephenie Meyer are looking to produce six standalone Twilight short films, written by female fans.
In a surprising initiative, Lionsgate announced last year that the studio would be revisiting Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, with fanfiction-style short films exploring peripheral characters from the canon.
The Storytellers: New Voices of the Twilight Saga seeks to promote budding young female filmmakers. The panel designated to choose the six best scripts consisted of Stephenie Meyer, Lionsgate, Women In Film, Facebook and Volvo.
Meyer said about the short film competition when it first launched, “One of my favorite things about my time with Twilight was the creativity of the fans. I loved their additions to my imaginary world, especially their visual artistry. I’m excited to see more visual innovation based around these characters.”
Now, the six scripts that will be turned into short films have been chosen. Unsurprisingly, Edward’s adopted sister Alice proved a popular central character for screenwriting hopefuls, and is featured in three of the selected stories. One story focuses on Carlisle, another on Jane the Volturi, and one on Benjamin (one of the vampires in the Egyptian coven).

Now it’s time for director hopefuls to submit their pitches; the deadline is Feb. 20, so if you’re a female filmmaker with a passion for the Twilight universe, what are you waiting for?!
We probably can’t expect the actors to return for these short films; both Ashley Greene (Alice) and Peter Facinelli (Carlisle) have moved on to other projects. Perhaps Rami Malek, the actor who played Benjamin in Breaking Dawn: Part 2 would want to explore his character a little deeper? Otherwise, new actors will have the chance to breathe life (pun intended) into these characters.
